Steam Scream V is on until Nov 2. Spooky games crowd the store this week, so the quieter weeks after it are worth a look.

Why do people ask for free keys they won't use?

Free keys sell. Some accounts pose as curators, streamers or press, collect keys from many studios and sell them on key sites. You lose a sale and the buyer often gets a key that is later revoked.

What do you look at?

Only what Steam shows to anyone on the profile: how old the account is, its Steam level, how many games it owns and plays, its friends, any bans, and whether it owns games like yours. Throwaway accounts are young, empty and quiet.

The profile is private. Is that bad?

Not always, plenty of players keep their profile private. But someone asking you for a key wants your trust, and real creators usually have nothing to hide. Ask them to make it public for a moment, or to write from the email on their channel.

Does the person know I checked them?

No. We only read the public profile, the same way you would by opening it in your browser.

Is it free?

Yes, no sign-up needed.
